The Quiet Beauty of Spring in Oaxaca: Savoring Spring Dusk in Rooftop Bars and Sunset Views

When people ask about the best time to visit Oaxaca, they often expect one answer.

But spring — April through early June — has its own kind of beauty.

It’s not the coolest season. It’s not the busiest. It doesn’t have the intensity of Día de Muertos or the drama of Guelaguetza.

What it has is light, color, and space.

Is Oaxaca Hot in Spring?

Yes.

By late morning, the sun is strong. May especially can feel intense in the middle of the day.

But the heat changes the rhythm of the city in a way that many travelers end up loving.

You wake earlier. You walk slower. You pause more.

Spring in Oaxaca isn’t about rushing from museum to museum — it’s about inhabiting the hours differently.

A City in Bloom

Spring is when jacarandas soften the streets in purple, Primaveras bloom yellow and bougainvillea spills over white colonial walls.

The sky feels impossibly blue.

The gardens around Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán are especially beautiful this time of year — bright, fragrant, and less crowded than high season.

It’s also a wonderful moment to visit the Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca, where many native plants are thriving before the summer rains begin.

Spring Events in Oaxaca

While spring is quieter than fall, it still offers meaningful cultural moments:

  • Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions moving through Centro

  • Local food fairs and seasonal markets

  • Intimate mezcal festivals and tastings before summer tourism increases

The city feels active — but not overwhelmed.

You experience Oaxaca in a more local, lived-in way.

It also hardly ever rains, so it is particularly interesting for wedding planners, which makes the city fill up with wedding Calendas in the evenings.

Evenings Were Made for Terraces

If midday belongs to shade, evenings belong to rooftops.

Some of our favorite places for a sunset mezcal or cocktail:

  • Terraza Los Amantes

  • Casa Oaxaca El Restaurante

  • Sur a Norte

As the sun softens, the heat lifts and the city turns golden. Spring sunsets are long and dramatic — and the pace of dinner stretches beautifully.

How We Slow Down the Heat

At El Diablo y la Luna, spring afternoons often look like this:

A morning exploring Centro.A long lunch in the shade. Then returning for a quiet swim in the pool before the evening begins.

The pool becomes part of the rhythm — not an escape from the season, but a way to embrace it comfortably.

Afterward, the terrace feels even softer.

Spring isn’t about avoiding the heat.

It’s about knowing how to move with it.

Why Spring Might Be the Best Time to Visit Oaxaca

Because it’s less performative.

Fewer crowds.More space in restaurants.Easier reservations.Slower mornings.

If you’re looking for perfect cool weather, another season might suit you better.

But if you’re looking for:

Light.Color.And a quieter version of Oaxaca.

Spring is quietly beautiful.
